Meander out into the woods on a pair of snowshoes! Snowshoeing offers lots of
opportunities to explore the winter woods and view wildlife in a quiet way at
your own pace. Test yourself on backcountry terrain or follow an easy wide path
through the woods.
Stop by the front
desk and we'll gladly lend you a pair of snowshoes
and make recommendations for area trails.
Many of our guests
have never snowshoed, but everyone has a great
time giving it a try! Here is a handy list
of tips for novice to seasoned snowshoers .
. .
- Wear winter boots - the snowshoes strap right
over them
- Wear layers of clothes - you can get warm
out tromping through the woods, and chilly
when you take a break
- Bring a snack - we love the Caribou Crossing
Trail Mix - and a water bottle
- Go with someone else
- Try more than one short, easy trail first,
then move up to a longer, more difficult trail
- Bring your camera!!
- Hike alongside cross-country trails, not
over the tracks and trail
Superior National at Lutsen easy,
great for families & novices
You can rent
snowshoes, try them out over the mildly rolling
hills of the golf course, and come back for cocoa
at Caribou Crossing.
Onion River Road easy,
great for families & novices
Try snowshoeing
alongside this snowy woodland road. Once you
get your legs, try one of the adjoining trails
to Oberg & Leveaux. You can 'shoe alongside the
easy cross-country ski loop (2.75 miles / 4.4K)
that heads north from the parking area, too.
Oberg & Leveaux more
difficult, hilly and longer distances
Follow the Superior
Hiking Trails up and around Oberg or Leveaux
Mountains. Both hikes allow you to traverse through
maple and birch forests, up hillsides, around
the peaks and back down the wooded hillsides.
Nice views of Lake Superior and the Sawtooth
Ridges.
Sugarbush Snowshoe Trail easy
to more difficult depending on length
Explore the winter
woods along this easy trail. You can turn around
at any point and return, or if you are looking
for a longer winter hike, this trail leads 6K
(+ Leveaux Mountain Loop, if you want) over to
the Onion River Road.
Cascade River State
Park easy from campground,
more difficult along hiking trails
Meander through
cedar and pine forests, observing small critter
tracks along snow tops. If you decide to follow
the trail to the Cascade River, you may need
to pop your 'shoes off for a short descent to
the river trail.
Pincushion Mountains Snowshoe Trail easy,
great for families & novices
Head to Grand
Marais and up the hill to this delightful little
trail. Less than one mile, it departs from the
overlook heading east through a birch woods and
then curves around back over a slightly hilly
terrain back to the parking area.

George Washington Pines easy,
great for families & novices
If you've tried
snowshoeing, like it and want to get out in the
woods, this is the perfect second-time-out trail
choice. At just under 2 miles, the loop meanders
through a pine forest, edges the Elbow River
and returns through a beautiful stand of old
cedar. It is a little out of the way, but safe,
easy and will give you a great out-in-the-woods
experience!
