North Shore Biking

Bike here.

Miles of both rugged and paved trails near our doorstep, on-site bike repair and washing stations, and “Cooler by the Lake” temperatures make Caribou Highlands the best basecamp for north shore biking.

The variety of area trails means that there’s something for bikers of all skill levels. See our map of nearby trail heads and parking areas below, or check out the complete list of area bike trails at Visit Cook County’s website.

The closest trail, at the bottom of Ski Hill Road, is the newly paved, Gitchi Gami Trail. A quick trip up the road provides hard-pack mountain bike trails. So have a hearty breakfast at Moguls, fill your water bottles and enjoy some fabulous biking.

Annual: June • Website

The 99er is the granddaddy of north shore bike races, and conveniently it starts and finishes near Caribou Highlands. This 99 mile race involves roughly 7,000 feet of climbing on a mix of single track, paved trails, snowmobile/ski trails and forest service roads.

Is 99 miles too much for you? Sign up for one of their shorter races from 69 miles down to 19. There are even Kids Races! Whichever you race – stay at Caribou Highlands.

Annual: May • Website

The very first Le Grand Du Nord in May of 2016 was a huge success. This race starts and stops in Grand Marais. The race offers a 100 and 50-mile course, with one halfway checkpoint each. What makes it unique is that it’s run on Heck of the North’s principles of: cue card navigation, self-supported riding ethics, a physically challenging course and amazingly beautiful scenery.
